How can lecture be optimally used?

With lectures or speeches, different goals can be fulfilled. For example, a lecture can:

• spread knowledge
• begin a new topic
• bring focus onto an existing topic
• prepare a decision making process
• increase the motivation of the listeners

etc.

The biggest advantage in a lecture, is how variable they can be. It may be short and to the point, to begin further discussion on a new theme. It may also contain much detailed information to definitively deal with a given topic or problem.
A speech can be funny, serious, profound, motivating, informative or many other things, depending on requirements or topic. There is just one thing it can never be, if it is to reach its audience - boring!
